Life Is Messy: third time better be the charm.

I am over the moon! I thought I had been defeated by an evil piece of technology but I overcame. I knew that a proper stand-off with a pair of stork scissors and ample amounts of tea would end in my eventual victory. And I didn’t even have to look at the instructional manual. Although, I probably should have.

Pft! Who does that anymore?

Yeah.

Well, for our anniversary, Josh got me an embroidery machine. My happy dance was mostly for the extreme discount he got it but I was really excited to add it to my little home studio. I could finally get into quilting and create my own designs. It was going to be magical. I think Josh could literally see the stars in my eyes. I was ready.

Nope. No, I wasn’t. In fact, I freaking sucked at it. When I plugged the machine into my Mac and realized it was only compatible with PC, I knew this was going to be a long battle. I thought I was cute with my little drawings and I was going to make these awesome items. I was wrong people. So so wrong. It started with my rose owl design.

I won’t go into boring details but instead, I will show my pathetic-ness in photographs. Que the dramatic music!

My first attempt ended with the needle breaking into the plastic hoop. Plus, the crappy stitch. I didn't bother cleaning him up.

The second attempt looked promising but when I went to change colors, the alignment of the design got all messed up and it started to embroider in the wrong places. Thus, more fabric and time was lost. I was baffled.

My last attempt ending in this not so perfect but absolutely perfect to me version that I am in love with. I know you shouldn’t talk so fondly about your own work but this is major for me. Both the accomplishment AND the self appreciation.

If you were wondering, I did give myself and actual pat on the back. We all deserve one when life gets messy.

  1. I’ve never used an embroidery machine before! My serger alone took me many tries to thread properly the first time. (I even had to look up Youtube videos.) I still fight with it every now and then. Embroidery machines have always looked even more complicated to me.

Congrats on figuring it out after a couple tries! I think the last one you got looks great. Can’t wait to see what else you do with it!

    1. I haven’t even touched the serger I got. It LOOKS confusing! All-in-all the embroidery machine is not that bad. Using a design that is your own is the issue. Everything has to be precise and I still don’t have it precise lol

  2. I think your little owl is adorable! I wouldn’t even know what to do with such a machine or how to even start working on it, so you’re lightyears ahead of me, haha! I think you did a great job! Was this your first time ever embroidering?

  3. I think that looks great! I know it was rough getting used to the machine, but it’s clear that “practise makes perfect” πŸ˜€ I do hope you’ll share more of your works in the future! ^^

  4. Awww, the final result looks so awesome and adorable!! πŸ˜€ I am glad that you stuck with it and got the design to work. It would have been a big hassle. It is always a nightmare when you get things and they only work on PC. >.<

  5. This is awesome! πŸ˜€ The owl looks super cute! Keep practicing and I’m sure we’ll be seeing much more awesome stuff soon.

I always admire people who do sewing crafts because I really don’t have the patience to sew (either by hand or by machine)!

  6. this is great! I’ve always admired people with sewing/embroidey/knitting skills haha Doing such requires a lot of patience, passion and harwork, which i don’t usually have haha. Good job on your master piece! be proud, it’s beautiful πŸ˜‰

  7. You can never go wrong with ample amounts of tea πŸ™‚

How sweet of Josh to get you an embroidery machine! I’m glad you somehow managed to get it working. Sounds like a lot of work, haha. The owl is adorable πŸ™‚

  8. That is just darling! I loved how you didn’t give up on a project that is deemed something hard. Good job! You deserve that well pat on the back. I am an agreement with Melissa that the owl is super cute.
